5 teams qualify for knock out stages of Munster Winter League
Last weekend, the final group games of the Munster Winter League Phase II were completed. We
had six teams in action, some were already qualified while others needed a positive result in order
to qualify from their group. The men’s grade 2 team, with qualification already secured, travelled to
Lower Aghada to play their third and final group game. Our men have played solid tennis and
finished top of the table after a 3-1 victory in Aghada. Next up is a home tie against Douglas (blue) in
a few week’s time. The ladies grade 4 team made it three wins from three with a 4-0 home win over
St. Michaels (orange) and qualify with ease to the knock out stages. For the next round, they have
been drawn to play Sunday’s Well (green) at home. The grade 5 men’s team finished their group
campaign with a trip to Cork to play Sunday’s Well (navy). The men had two wins from two already
and completed a hat-trick of success with a 3-1 victory on the banks of the Lee. The lads have been
drawn to play Douglas (white) at home in the next round. The ladies grade 6 (rock) team travelled to
Tipperary to take on Roscrea (red). Both teams were already guaranteed qualification, but
Mitchelstown secured top spot in the group with an impressive 3-1 away win in the Premier county.
The ladies have been drawn to play Crosshaven at home in the next round. The grade 6 men’s team
travelled to Limerick to play the Catholic Institute in a must win match. Unfortunately, the result
didn’t go our way, the home side winning 3-1 to take second place in the group and eliminating our
side. Our team, captained by Colm Baker, will take from the competition valuable experience and
pride from the group games and I’m sure they will be looking forward to the next Munster Tennis
competition. The ladies grade 6 (scissors) team completed their group campaign with a home tie
against Rushbrooke (gold). The ladies had a tough task of trying to win 4-0 in order to qualify.
Unfortunately, it was a step too far, the ladies from Cobh proved to be too strong for our side,
winning 4-0 last Sunday afternoon. The team, captained by Aideen O’Brien, can be proud of their
efforts in their two group games and hopefully will take the positives from the competition and take
part in further inter club competitions in the future.

Manning, were undefeated in the group games and will look to carry the positive momentum into
